In April 2018, the Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS) hosted the Ancient Cahokia Future Visions conference. This event was sponsored the University of Illinois Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and commemorated the University of Illinois’ 150th anniversary. The Ancient Cahokia Future Visions conference brought archaeologists, native peoples, dignitaries, and advocates from around the United States to discuss the past and future of Cahokia–North America’s first Native city. The goal of the conference was to try to regain momentum from efforts to make Cahokia a unit of the National Park Service in 2016 and to introduce the Cahokia Initiative.
